Apostle K Akanbi Odunlami JP goes to sleep in the Lord!
The ascension to higher glory of Apostle Kolawole Akanbi Odunlami JP was announced by his family on Friday the 2nd of Octobber, 2020. The late octogenarian passed away peacefully, surrounded by some of his children and grand grandchildren at his Olokuta home in Idi Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Known fondly as Baba Olopa for good reasons, the apostle was born at Otta, Ogun state in 1937 into the families of Odunlami and Olude, both of Aworiland. He started his career initially as a teacher, then head teacher. Then he joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1967 during the ‘Wet e’ era. Most of his initial years in the force was in the Mobile Police Unit (MOPOL) where he earned the reputation of the officer of all officers that was never shy of call of duty.
The recognition as a courageous crime fighter, leading from the front stood out as he was moved on as a pioneer Officer commanding, Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) Ogun State at a time of great tumult, a command that he headed for a long while.
The apostle eventually retired meritoriously in January, 2002, having attained the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police after serving in various capacities especially as officer in charge, CIB, Ogun State, Divisional Crime Officer, Hong Yola, DPO, Ketu Alapere, Area Commander H Ogudu, Lagos, O/C – (officer commanding), X Squad, equivalent of the Military Police, unit that ensures discipline within the rank and file of the police and ancillary forces.
During the retirement celebration that was held in his honour, he was celebrated as the first Otta
indigene to attain that rank of ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE or its equivalent, be it in the military or any other force in Otta, perhaps the whole of Aworiland!
Apostle Akanbi Odunlami or Baba Olopa was humble, church going and a disciplinarian, teacher, councillor, guardian, spiritual fatherand great philanthropist, whose hands are noticeable on several activities all over the state and especially the churches where he worshipped.
The apostle was an active member of YMCA, St John’s Anglican Church, Igbein Abeokuta. At Otta, he was a regular and active member of Ogo Oluwa Society, St Micheal’s African church, Igbo Olori, Otta where his exceptional philanthropic activities culminated in being made the Osi Baba Ijo and was also nicknamed Baba Alufa due to his hospitalitiy towards clergymen.
The family spokespersons have informed: Funeral rites will commence on Wednesday, 7th of October, 2020 at Abeokuta. The final interment takes place at Otta, Ogun state on Friday, 9th of October, 2020.
