Though “ Interference from high places” (quoting the Nigeria Police) marred the investigation of Dele Giwa’s murder through a parcel bomb 30 years ago, no amount of intimidation will ever keep his family and colleagues from seeking justice.

Giwa’s constituency, Nigerian journalists did all they could to ensure justice was served hot, but greater powers according to the Police disallowed sourcing of proper ingredients for the menu. The Nigeria Police Force closed the file on the investigation unceremoniously. Years later, then Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the investigations, Chris Omeben said in an interview, his hands were tied, and that interference from powers that be frustrated Police efforts.

In desperate search for justice, there were protests, books written, colloquiums held. ‘Who killed Dele Giwa?’ became a chorus. His lawyer, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi stepped on toes, damned consequences and was in and out of detention over his insistence on getting justice for the murdered journalist.

The Deji Elumoye-led Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to remind the killers of the seasoned journalist that there is no peace for the wicked, as the Council holds a colloquium in conjunction with Giwa’s family, on October 19, to examine new facts and revisit old ones towards bringing the murderers to book.

Human rights personalities expected to grace the 30th anniversary of Giwa’s  death and exchange notes include, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, Barristers Femi Falana (SAN), Festus Keyamo, Ndubuisi Kanu, Major Debo Bashorun (Rtd) among others.

Dele Giwa, co-founding editor of Newswatch Magazine, born 16 March, 1947, was killed with a parcel bomb on October 19, 1986 in his house in Lagos. His killers are still enjoying their freedom.
