‘I was told I won’t be pregnant if I remove fibroid’
I am 30years old with 8 years history of Infertility. I got married to Tolu, my present husband when I was 22 years old. Since then, we have been struggling with this Infertility problem.
I have been to several places, Churches, met doctors who had come up with the fact that I had fibroids.
Wonderful! There is a Fertility Specialist to boost fertility, I never knew. Fibroid has been with me for a long time.
All the doctors I had met shared the same opinion; If the fibroid is removed, I may not be able to get pregnant.
My menses had two things in common. Pain and excessive bleeding.
Many times I remained at home, absent from work.
I felt I need to discuss with my close friend who told me she had similar problem in the past.
He took me to a Fertility Specialist near me. By this time, I had lost so much blood and was already feeling dizzy.
Good morning doctor, I said
You are welcome Madam. What can I do for you?
I replied: Doctor, I am pale, my PCV is 18%, I need Blood Transfusion.
Why? He asked.
I have fibroid and I am reliably informed that if it is removed, I may not be pregnant.
He was shocked and said, Madam, we remove those fibroids that will prevent you from getting pregnant.
I was confused! Contradictions! I seemed to be saying to myself. Others have been telling me if I remove these fibroids I may not be pregnant. What is this guy saying?
To prove his claim further, he brought out his i-Pad, started showing me pictures and videos of the fibroids he had removed.
Though I. was a little bit relieved, I was still confused. He gave me the phone numbers of the patients he had operated for fibroids.
He told me further that some of the fibroids were removed through vagina, without leaving scar or wound on the patients especially if they are small.
“The patients leave that same day, and resume work the next day.”
This seemed to me: A fairy tale from wonder land.
Knowledge is not only light but power. I told Tolu when I got home.
I knew people who lost their lives after removing fibroids. It is a fearful operation.
I know my parents wouldn’t agree, their consent not necessary.
We agreed to go for the day operation, called Hysteroscopy.
Many of us were operated and discharged the same day, next day, I resumed duty.
The following month, my menses resumed, no pain, normal bleeding!
My husband only noticed when he saw me with sanitary pad! So easy!
Three months after, I missed my period, pregnancy confirmed through pregnancy test followed by Ultrasound scan. I could not believe it!
May be I was dreaming and would soon wake up. Today, I am three months pregnant with a boy. What a bundle of joy!
